COMBONI MISSIONARIES OF THE HEART OF JESUS
IN EGYPT AND SUDAN

MINI GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF EGYPT AND SUDAN
September 9, 2023

On September 9, 2023, a mini-provincial assembly was held in Cordi Jesu, with the attendance of the confrères of Egypt, Sudan and Lebanon. The meeting began with Daniel Sorur’s letter to fr. Sembianti, Beirut 25 September 1884 that says:

“I would very much like to have news of the Mission and above all of Sudan, about which we no longer hear a word, not even in the newspapers: this shows that things are getting worse every day. Vague and uncertain rumors, especially in these regions where news come late, run about the fate of our confreres prisoners, which – although doubtful – cannot be passed over in silence by those who are united with them for the same purpose.”

Fr. Tesfaye Tadesse (General Superior) sent a message to the members of the province.

The assembly discussed the pastoral activities of the different communities and gave opportunities for the confrères to share about their reality regarding the ongoing war in Sudan. The 3 communities of Khartoum (CCK, Bahri, Omdurman) are currently under the control of the Rapid Support Forces. Besides this, discussions revolved around education, parish activities, Eucharist celebrations, catechesis, and group activities.

The Mini Assembly ended with a Eucharistic Celebration dedicated to St Peter Claver.

THE COMBONI MISSIONARIES OF THE HEART OF JESUS ARE A RELIGIOUS AND MISSIONARY CONGREGATION FOUNDED BY  Daniel Comboni on
1 June 1867.

At an early age Comboni felt a strong call for the mission in Africa. It was a continent not yet fully explored in those days, and a place where Christianity was not well known. He founded two Institutes of men and women to attend to the needs of the Africans of his time. But, above all, he dreamed of Africans being missionaries of their own people. His motto was “to save Africa with Africa”. Now, more than 150 years later (155 precisely), the Comboni Missionaries come from forty-four nationalities and are present in fifty countries worldwide.

Our commitment is to people who are deprived of their basic human rights to freedom, faith, health, education, a way to earn a living, and the opportunity to create a better life for themselves and the people they love. Comboni Missionary priests and lay-religious believe God’s call to Mission is as strong today as it was 2,000 years ago when Jesus said to his apostles, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation” (Mark 16:15). We live a vowed life and dedicate ourselves to taking the Gospel to the poorest and most abandoned wherever they are, no matter how dire their circumstances.

In 1864, St. Daniel Comboni laid out a plan for the mission in Africa. That plan was to regenerate Africa through Africans.
